Johnny, you were robbed.
Not just robbed, but totally stabbed in the back. Judging should not be retaliatory, and that’s exactly what happened. I think Johnny Weir has been justified in calling out the bullshittier aspects of the sport — if he doesn’t do it, no one else will — but I’m sure he knew it was going to come at the cost of a medal.
That said, judges need to remove themselves from media blitz/drama/etc and focus on what’s in front of them. Save for a flub on a spin (which, given the choreography, did not look like a mistake), his program was flawlessly executed. Furthermore, it was an original work with a personal vision. I think his program — a summary of his experience as a competitive figure skater — displays a depth unseen in the current crop of skaters. No one has ever seen Weir skate that good, and it is a shame the judges were so unwilling to reward his hard work.
I know I shouldn’t be shocked by this; after all, I’ve called out the sport on its unethical judging before. But to see it unfold on the screen is heartbreaking and absolutely unjust. Fans of the sport deserve better from the people responsible for writing its history.
