Things and Stuff
Look, I’m sorry I have been quieter than usual. The semester started and I’m trying to wrap my teeny brain around my 5-class teaching load. But here are some things that are things:
- I saw the worst fuckin’ band last night. They opened up for Asobi Seksu and suuuuuuucked. I know lots of you love Animal Collective, but their shapeless pseudohippy music is ruining everything. This doucheband I saw last night brought out a digeridoo in their set. No. No. No. And it was this monotonous din for 10 minutes. This is why I only listen to bands that can be described with terms such as “divorce drums,” “bad vibes,” and “one way ticket to bummerville” these days. Worst part is that they called themselves [[[Taco]]]. Seriously, are they not aware of “Puttin’ on the Ritz”? Is this my first sign of being too old for this shit?
- Even worse was that the aforementioned digeridoo song was nothing but an extended jam of the verse portion to the Rolling Stones’ “Jumpin’ Jack Flash.”
- Asobi Seksu, on the other hand, slayed it. I’ve only recently warmed up to the band, so I’m not familiar with their catalog, but man were they the right band for the First Unitarian Church’s chapel space last night. I have never encountered a louder acoustic act before, and until something tops this, I’m pretty certain their set will remain a yardstick for future acoustic acts I may encounter. Loud but not deafening, the sound bounced off the ancient paneling of the chapel space and sounded brilliant. If it weren’t for the out-of-tune FUC piano, their show would have been too slick, too refined, and frankly boring. The small mistakes balanced out the rest. And I couldn’t help but cringe when Yuki told the story about tripping on mushrooms when the pew in front of me was filled with a family and their teenaged children. Kids: Don’t do drugs! Stay in school!
- I just recently remembered that in 2 weeks, I will get to see the Constantines on their home turf. I’m pretty excited about this, and very excited to get the eff out of Dodge — even if it’s only for a couple of days. Picastro rounds out the bill and I strongly encourage you to check out Miss Liz’s awesome music.
