This Weekend, Possibility of Snow Causes City to Go Into “Category 3 Kill-Storm” Mode

One of the things I haaaaaate, haaaate, haaaaaaaaaaaaaate about Philadelphia is the instant panic its citizens experience when the word “snow” is uttered and the totally ignorance of the same people to be proactive in taking precautions.

Big fucking deal if it snows. It’s winter — that’s what it’s supposed to do! I get depressed when there’s a 60-degree day in the dead of January.

  • If you weren’t eating eggs and drinking milk on a regular basis, this isn’t the time to start. So spare yourself the haphazard shopping spree, it makes you looked like a stoned-out-of-his-mind fraternity dude.
  • Plan for delays. You know some douchebag driver is going to cheese it on the streets, so don’t freak out by traffic, etc. Inclement weather calls for careful driving (well, that should go for any time you drive but I digress), so don’t expect to be barreling down Chestnut Street at 60 m.p.h.
  • Learn how to clear your fucking sidewalk. Throwing a bag of salt or carving out a small path is the wrong way to go about these things. Get yourself a shovel and broom to clear the sidewalk of ALL THE SNOW. The whole damn sidewalk. Not a small path. This is not the time to be a lazy fucker.

Once it is free of snow and ice, throw some kitty litter down. You can use some rock salt to de-ice, but don’t go crazy with it. Salt is bad for the water systems, anyway. Kitty litter gives the sidewalk some grip in icy temperatures.

Until the snow’s melted away, you should keep an eye on your sidewalk for ice build-up. Sweep/shovel away icy spots; use salt to treat the difficult areas. Reapply kitty litter so passerby won’t slip.
  • Staying in sounds nice but boy will you get bored fast. Go be social! Meet friends at a bar, indulge in wintry activities like ice skating, etc. This weather is totally awesome. Appreciate it while it lasts.
