Further proof of my “figure skaters know fuck-all about music” theory
As many of you know, I’m a reformed competitive figure skater. Couple years ago, I wrote a paper for the Experience Music Project’s Pop Conference about the ill-advised musical choices of skaters, and why this happens.
NYC happens to be a big figure skating city, so naturally this is incorporated Ito the annual Thanksgiving Day parade. Two particular instances:
• Carly Simon performing her hit fom “Working Girl” with Care Bears on Ice.
OK, this is just so bizarre that I’m going to let it slide. Bad drug trip-like.
• Andrea Bocelli singing holiday tunes while Emily Hughes skates around.
There are no words to describe this. It was like watching wallpaper dry.
My other favorite ill-advised musical choice: the cheerleading squad dancing to Lenny Kravitz’s version of “American Woman” in their “USA!” medley. Um, I don’t think that song means what you think it means, ladies.
Also weird was the Gibson float featuring Jimmy Fallon and the Roots. I get enough of the Roots in Philadelphia, so it’s a little discombobulating to see them on New York stations. It’s like a little raincloud following me wherever I go.
