In Instrument photographer Pat Graham examines the instruments that have brought some of the greatest rock songs to life. Ever focused on the sleigh bells in The Beach Boys’ “Good Vibrations?” Maybe not, but the song wouldn’t be the same without them. The specific sound that Johnny Marr was able to conjure from his Gibson on “Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now” simultaneously gave the song a bright momentum while complementing Morrissey’s moody delivery. Graham pays special attention to the instruments and allows their marks, dents, graffiti, areas of wear, even blood splatter, to reflect the hours of creative energy that is distilled through them.
