I Feel As Good As I Look

» toby and i went out to east austin for karaoke underground’s SXKU event at red’s scoot inn. towards the end of the night, it started raining REALLY BAD and if you’ve never ventured off the east coast, you’ll never be able to fully understand the far-reaching effects of this weather. anyway, none of the cab companies could get us a cab in a reasonable amount of time. my brilliant idea was to snag some clean trashbags i saw in the ladies room and make “ponchos”. i’d like to think im a pretty resourceful gal, but clearly the spirit of macgyver was not channeling through me when i came up with this. toby claims we look like windsocks. personally, i think we looked like retarded klansmen.

» so, karaoke underground. how cool is this?! thankfully philly has the locust bar on sunday nights, otherwise id be wishing for this to happen here. my selections were a tribute to matador records [helium's "leon's space song", pavement's "summer babe"] and toby did a jawbreaker song. also, everyone who participated sang fairly well.

» sunday was notable for another reason — pizza. THE QUEST IS OVER. now i can certainly move to austin, knowing that i can get a good slice of pizza at homeslice. totes authentic ’cause they even use roma food products. and uh, the wine selection is amazing. clearly they know how to pair their reds with pizza.

Love Of (Chemical) Diagrams

i dont even know where to fucking begin in my continuing recap of sxsw. because i dont believe in the faulknerian deconstruction of time, i’ll just start at the last place i left off.

» one of my personal highlights of sxsw wasn’t even the music, it was hanging out with my very good friend adrienne. in short, she is teh rad. this weekend, she has completely disproved my theory that med school students do not know how to rock, a theory previously supported by all the douchebags i dealt with back when i booked doc watsons. in this photo she is diagramming one of the enzymes contained in my package of dissolving multi-vitamins.

» so i participated in this panel called blogs gone wild, which was about music blogging. if you came to this site because of the panel, ill give you five dollars. [total lie.] of course, why would you? i was an unhealthy/ungodly/unwelcome combination of drunk/hungover, food-/sleep-deprived and totally nervous. i also felt fairly out of place on the panel because hey, let’s face it, everyone else there was a legitimate blogger; i am the asshole with an internet connection and a couple minutes to spare each day.

despite the self-deprecating remarks ["talking on this panel is the most promotion i've done for my blog"], i really enjoyed the conversation. matt perpetua and mark willett were, as expected, the people who had thoughtful comments, amy phillips put it into a journalistic perspective and dave brooklyn vegan was fairly quiet, leaving us to wonder a) what his last name is, b) how he manages to post so much. a man of intrigue, that brooklyn vegan.

for the most part, i’d like to think i was fairly quiet, partially because i didnt know what to say and partially because i was trying hard not to swear. i know what you’re thinking, “but maria, you’re on the radio, so you know how to talk without swearing!” i suppose this is true but have you actually listened to my on-air banter? first of all, it sounds BO-RING and secondly, i talk really slow and break up my sentences awkwardly. swearing only resurfaces when im annoyed with something but let’s face it — im perturbed by pretty much everything.

and thus, the Q&A portion of the panel. i really hope there’s some sort of audio archive, because i’d be curious to know what i was responding to. the first question i vaguely recall had to do with paid blogging and the concept of selling out, to which i ranted. allow me to recap and clarify some of those points, since my brain was only working part of the time:

  • first off, i dare you to find a person who isn’t selling out in the broadest sense of the word. we cant find a clean shirt ’cause we forgot to do laundry, so we have to rewear another one; we go for the overpriced bottle of water ’cause there’s no cheap water available; we pre-game at home before boozing it up at shows, etc. we make compromises every day — that’s life.
  • it’s the economy, stupid: established writing outlets like the village voice can’t afford fact checkers and newspapers are going down the drain; places that can afford to pay writers [and in a larger sense, artists because corporate/commercial work is de rigueur in the photo industry, i speak from experience.] are corporations like toyota because they have all this cash devoted to marketing. [lets not even go into indie publishing, they all expect you to write for free.] this strikes me as completely ass-backwards but since i struggle to pay my bills month-to-month, taking on freelance work is my only choice. when i take on clients, i do my best to make sure im not going to do something ill totally regret down the line. in my mind, blogging for toyota/yaris is more aligned with my ethics/morals/etc than oh, shilling for hummer. if there’s a hybrid or ethanol fueled H2, i certainly havent heard about it yet.
  • the second question has completly escaped my memory but i certainly recall my response, “what kind of fucking question is that? why would we ever write about bad music on our blogs?” yeah, it was harsh and i am notorious for asking stupid questions but even this was beneath me. and despite my snark, if you paid attention closer, you’d understand the larger point — us music bloggers have to write about things which inspire us or at the very least, find interesting on some level, which is not easy when you’ve got deadlines and such. [interestingly enough, a lot of the records on my year-end lists were records that i struggled with. but let's not conflate problematic with bad, OK?]

so that was that. only a handful of people bothered to talk to me, but then again, i would have avoided an asshole like me as well.

» post-panel, i had lunch with some nice folks [matt, chris from parts & labor, eppy from ilm, gerry] at ironworks but this is when i knew things had taken a turn for the worse — i stared at my bbq sandwich. STARED, people. i was so far gone that i couldnt even eat and if you know me, i love food.

» in my daze i made my way over to the porchlight pop fest. i recall seeing oxford collapse [uh, again?], air traffic controllers and part of +/- before i decided that heading back to the hotel to check email/recharge would be a smart idea.

» because of a “food glitch” [ie, the restaurant didnt bring our food for over an hour, in fact, we left before being served], i missed out on some saturday showcases. and the line to see the joggers was INSANE, even for badges. so i hightailed it over to antone’s for superchunk and then caught the bats. considering the shape i was in by this point, it was probably better to keep things low-key.

    Clockcleaner @ Snake Eyes Vinyl

» richie & sharkey at snake eyes, more than likely plotting revenge against the shitty damn yankees tribute band that stole their set time.

» day time: snake eyes vinyl to see clockcleaner, spotted j mascis there. i had a couple of tacos? went to the chunklet/monitor party which was alright.

» it is no longer a theory, but a law: whenever i am in the presence of the oxford collapse, i’ll be drunk in zero seconds flat. actually, its sub pop’s fault for signing those assholes and letting them buy me drinks on the label’s tab.

the evening started off innocently enough at the sub pop showcase. eugene mirman had us laughing so hard i nearly lost complete control of my bladder, kelley stoltz was good and im pretty certain i caught some of band of horses but at that point, things were a little foggy. fethers and i headed over to the 12XU showcase in hopes of the dB’s busting out some oldies but this was not the case. we may or may not have heckled the band and then ran off to see the spinto band. caught some of that and then ran over to love is all. i have NO MEMORY of love is all because i was chatting it up with folks.

» then my evening takes turn for the awesomely worst by heading to a hotel party where southern comfort is being served out a keg-like container. the scene was very rock’n'roll — drugs on the dresser [ew, gross, thats for the dresser AND drugs], smoking in a non-smoking room i talked to various philly folks and one of the dudes from hot chip. [he was cute but i am meh on his band] sometimes its funny being at these kinds of parties.

fethers was too wasted to walk and im fairly certain i carried him to my hotel room, which felt like miles.

oh. my. freaking. god. im beginning to think i have cotard’s syndrome because there is no way i can possibly be alive right now. i have done so much in the last 24 hours that if i stop to rest, i’m a goner.

hello to all those who have found their way here as a result of my participation in today’s music blogging panel. im sorry i swore so much!

have a look at the video i shot for the associated press with i love you but ive chosen darkness.

    gettin' awesome

» did you know headbands are making their way back in?! jesse [who runs flameshovel recs and plays in the narrator] and 2/3rds of oxford collapse show off their style at last night’s late late late late night party at a warehouse on nueces.

» what is it about morning weather in austin that makes me want to commit suicide? everyday i wake up and its grey as fuck and slightly chilly [but not chilly enough to think twice about donning shorts].

» seen: serena maneesh [day], ted leo [day], zutons [night], nethers, national eye, oxford collapse, hudson bell, part chimp [HOLY FUCK GO SEE THEM PLAY @ SILK CITY], thunderbirds are now!

» for anyone curious, you can see my photos here.

    special event ahead

» seen: kiss me deadly, love of diagrams, pidgeon, low skies, capitol years. missed: secret echo & bunnymen / spoon gig, ’cause really, why? heard the bunnymen were faaaantastic though.

» today was a long day of email checking/review-writin’ and then clockcleaner rescued me. we went to guero’s for some tacos where sharkey swore like a sailor on leave with a table full of toddlers behind him.

» the stereogum party was in full effect when i got there with ted leo on the stage. excellent set but that’s ALWAYS the case with ted. headed over to emo’s ['cause there's always something good there] and caught serena maneesh.

» on the dance card for tonight: oxford collapse and then some!

    promise to write more tomorrow!

    wednesday

    Wednesday, March 15th, 2006

» OK, has any of this ever happened to you before, because i’m totally embarrassed. i sat down in the wrong seat for my atlanta-austin flight. how could i confuse the number?

» life’s a breeze if you’re a panelist at sxsw — there’s expedited lines and all sorts of shit available for you. got my badge so quick that my posse [consisting of toby, dave and caryn] hightailed it to this mexican restaurant i like a whole lot [but im not telling you what it is because its Top Secret]. the funny thing about sxsw is that i never have any recollection of eating, even though i know i do it [esp since i've blogged about it]. also disturbing is my ability to subsist on one meal a day.

» wednesday at sxsw is weird because its a day of getting your bearings and not much else. caryn and i rolled around in the back of a pick-up truck with local band i love you but ive chosen darkness. caryn chatted it up, i rolled tape. we went for some coffee, bought records at end of an ear [caryn picked up an in camera record at the recommendation of the dudes], hung out at barton springs. they’re nice dudes and heading out on tour soon, so see them when they hit your town. i checked out a bit of their set during the emo’s/tagworld day party. good stuff. i can’t elaborate much further than that, as ill have to write about it for yaris.

» the scene: lots of dudes with bad facial hair choices. i had this thought last night at the baggage claim as i was standing in a sea of dudes like these, “look around, these are your peers. kill yourself.”

thats about it for now, heading off to the showcases in a moment. tonight i plan on checking out love of diagrams, chicago friends low skies [confidental to dean: they like to refer to philly as "tiny town"], capitol years and ralph’s band jai alai savant

    something about airplanes

    Tuesday, March 14th, 2006

» oh philly, why does our local airport look like ass? drab structures wrapped in constant construction and oh, i paid three dollars for a bottle of water. maybe thats because i fly budget and as such, im sequestered to the forgotten child, terminal e. im sitting here in atlanta’s airport impressed tenfold — not only have i checked my email [how'd i go so long without wi-fi?!], but i’ve totally picked up the most godhead of lipgloss and browsed at a gazillion stores. i am not existing in a transit utopia however, as the children’s jungle gym is catticorner from the smoking lounge — a major thumbs down.

» which reminds me: how psyched am i to hear that austin music venues are smoke-free? after last week’s show at tritone where i went home coughing up half a lung [no really, you should see what came out of me, ugh, barf], i really really really really want the city of philadelphia to enact a similar law.

» also in atlanta: witnessing an ad for the vistors bureau featuring collective soul. they rock climb [indoors]! they hang out at the museum and opera, yet they have the collective [sic] appeal of a doormat.

» thanks to jt, ive got a swank digital camera that i’ll be using to document my comings and goings for yaris.

» speaking of comings and goings: i need to plan out my sxsw schedule. OMG I AM SO SO SO PSYCHED. I’ve been waiting all year.

    whiner’s blues

    Monday, February 27th, 2006

» considering that indie rock is pretty much synonymous with “selling out” and “farm team to major labels”, its moments like this that make me proud. amazing to think that hummer would ask to lease a song from a band where its leader works for the world wildlife federation. who said indie rock killed irony dead?

» plain parade had another totes increds show this past friday night at the m-room. big thumbs up to the eames era, whose final song was a rosebuds cover. the whole night was a non-stop love buzz that made its way over to party central — uh, i mean the walker lundee house — into the wee hours of the morning. unfortunately, i am getting old and lame and felt like crawling into bed before sunrise, so i went home on the early side.

» saturday i caught belong at the khyber with sir blackmail. you know, i cant tell if im too stupid or smart for this art school bullshit sometimes. belong was one of those droney noise duos who play in the dark with video projections, except the video projections were of other rock bands. [yardbirds? i thought i spotted a young eric clapton in the footage.] SERIOUSLY, WHAT THE FUCK? i guess you could say, “well, thats what makes them so punk/etc” and i totally disagree. they’re not subverting any ideas of how a band should perform, i think they’re being downright cowardly and reveling in their lack of talent. since ive been suffering through an ear ache [and i feel an odd twinge in my eye, which i pray is not a resurgence of conjunctivitis], i left early with jt, missing out on stevenwardjames, even though he so politely welcomed us into the khyber. i feel like a jerk for missing his set, along with plain parade’s steady boyfriends, dragon city.

» back at jt’s house, we watched the end of heathers with the missus. i havent watched this in ages — i had forgotten how beautifully the scenes are shot, like bill eggleston on meth.

» HELP. i cant stop listening to ELO’s “evil woman”. i thought i got over my obsession this fall but its taken hold of me like a chronic disease. [that said, i cant wait to hear mike mcgonigal's paper on the band at emp this year.] its the string arrangements in the second and third verses, a counter-melody to jeff lynne’s lyrics, purring and coaxing like no other, building up in a crescendo until they “leave on the very next train”. yeah, the break has some orchestral pyrotechnics happening too, but that’s kinda obvious. [not that it isn't fingerpointingly great, its just a given for lynne to be so damned dramatic in that part.] also to note: “evil woman” and “showdown” start with the same exact string intro. i just realized why they’re some of my favorites.

» speaking of emp, tenatively this is my panel:

    Sat 4/2
    4 – 5: 45 PM
    Life of the Party

CHRISTINE BACAREZA BALANCE, “Guilty Pleasures: The Affective Charge of Karaoke”

YUKA HASEGAWA, “Practices of Fandom and Connecting ‘Japanese’ in a Social Networking Website Mixi”

MARIA TESSA SCIARRINO, “Lost in Translation: Musical Selection In Figure Skating”

HOPE MUNRO SMITH, “What Happens in the Party Stays in the Party: Exploring the Guilty Pleasures in Caribbean Popular Music”

why is my rock jock piece on essentially a karaoke panel? damned if i know but hey, cool!

»saturday i also spent my entire day at the library, writing eight skillion previews of bands people should see at SXSW. ill let you know where you can read these but in the meantime…
