Old Age, New Age, Totally Lame

July 24th, 2008

Vacation, all I ever wanted! Yes, sometimes a little break can change things around for the better. I definitely felt back in the swing of things after. Big thanks to Mike Lupica (of WFMU) for coverin’ on my 7/10 show!

To my surprise, that Douglas Armour song has stayed with me. I found myself singing it while doing the dishes earlier in the week and I was excited when it came on the radio tonight. Go figure.

I am finally getting around to listening to the Hold Steady, having heard one too many fawning NPR stories describing them as being “like Bruce Springsteen” (whom I am a fan of.) Years ago, it was common to hear the same thing said about Southside Johnny and the Jukes, and you’ll notice they don’t get talked about on Morning Edition quite so much. Needless to say, I was skeptical. However, I have to admit that the song you played (along with “Sequestered in Memphis”) are pretty great pop songs. If everything on commercial radio was delivered with that spirit, maybe I wouldn’t be in such a crap mood all the time.

Whenever I hear the Hold Steady, I am uncertain as to whether I think it’s an outtake from Eddie & The Cruisers, or it’s something I kinda like.

An old friend of Nicole’s played sax on the first Hold Steady record. When I told him sheepishly that his work reminded me on first blush of Clarence Clemons, he did not punch me in the noggin as I had expected but instead got real excited that someone picked up on what he/the band were going for, even then.

Ever since Can’t Stop The Bleeding called Hold Steady “later-period Soul Asylum fronted by Charles Nelson Reilly” I have found that I can’t hear them without that image in my head.

    And now, neither will I.
