You Keep Me Hanging On

Wednesday, August 16th, 2006

i’m pretty damn pleased with this show!

unfortunately, there was a bit of a wee crisis, or make that a wee-wee crisis. the nearest bathroom, the one which i use during the show, was out of service [something about the hallway flooding]. this meant that there was no available bathroom and wouldnt you know, i had an entire bottle of water pre-show. i know what you’re thinking: too. much. information. hey, don’t you want to know about the behind-the-scenes business of the music industry? now you know: sometimes there’s no place to pee and you have to hold it in.

Band On the Run

Okay Paddy, “Fraktur”
Director: Ryan Cannava

This is a town where ambition is treated like a four-letter word so when a local band comes out with a video it’s massive pandemonium, or in my case, blogworthy. Okay Paddy deserves an award for making videos that are awesome on so many levels — funny, screws around with narrative/city geography and looks good. The only issue I have is with the concept of indie rockers running — NOT REAL!

Bands, take note: hire this Ryan Cannava dude. Additionally, hire Brian of The Sw!ms to be in all your videos. His ‘fro is like the Bee Girl of hairstyles.

I can’t believe it was only a few years ago that Pat [the unfunny comedian] and I worked at Tower. He handed me a demo of his band and since then, it’s been true love.

News At 10: Music Blogger Writes About Music, Dog Bites Man

Sunday, August 13th, 2006

» If you were a captive audience on SEPTA last week, you might have stumbled upon a Metro article about Her Jazz.

» The ever-awesome Doree Shafrir wrote this hilarious piece on dating dealbreakers, featuring quotes from my pal [and PW writer] Maggie Serota.

» Picked up the new issue of _Philly Mag_. Before I go any further: I realize talking about the craptacularness of this mag is old hat and totes obvs but seriously, this “Best Of” shit is awful. A whole “Kids” category? Kill me, now. Please. [note: i happen to like kids, even though i was a crap babysitter in high school.]

» Martha Coolidge, why?! Well, ever since those two episodes of _Sex & the City_, I should have figured this was gonna happen.

» OK, music talk: *Antelope*. Is this what happens when you cross CCR guitar economics with post-punk? Maybe, maybe not but all I know is that I like listening to this song over and over again.

Antelope, “Game Over”

I mention them because they are touring, with Joe Lally of Fugazi of all things! Here’s some dates for you, and oh, buy their records:

09/11/06 Philadelphia, PA @ First Unitarian Church (2125 Chestnut St.). $8. 7:30pm All Ages.

09/12/06 New York, NY @ The Knitting Factory (74 Leonard St.). $8. 8pm All Ages.

09/13/06 Buffalo, NY @ Mohawk Place (47 East Mohawk St.). $7. 9pm All Ages.

09/14/06 Cleveland, OH @ Beachland Ballroom (15711 Waterloo Rd.). $7. 9pm All Ages.

09/15/06 Chicago, IL @ South Union Arts (1352 S. Union Ave.). $10. 9pm All Ages.

09/16/06 Dekalb, IL @ The House Cafe (263 E. Lincoln Highway). $6. 8pm All Ages.

09/17/06 Grand Rapids, MI @ Division Avenue Arts Collective (115 S. Division Ave.). $7. All Ages.

09/18/06 Detroit, MI @ Bohemian National Home (3009 Tillman St.). 9pm. All Ages.

09/19/06 Pittsburgh, PA @ Garfield Artworks (4931 Penn Ave.). $8. 8pm All Ages.

» Last things last: I realize that indie and punk rockers are not exactly the um, athletic types but I would like to play more tennis. James nonwithstanding [’cause he always plays with me], do any of you want to hit a few around? Who knows how long this weather will stick around!

You Keep Me Coming Home Again

Thursday, August 10th, 2006

Still trying to crawl out of my funeral and insomnia-induced haze and tackle the mountain of work at my job, so I’m staying offline until Monday. In the meantime, old Philly band The Reds garner an entry on Lost Bands of the New Wave Era, which is one of the best mp3 blogs out there.

Gone Fishin’

Due to a death in my family, I’ll be offline for a couple days.

Funnerer

Why torment yourself in Hipster Hell? Not only does this present itself as an option, it’s during the daylight hours! I like daylight, and not because its health benefits.

Like Honey To Bees For Blog Rockers

Friday, August 4th, 2006

Seriously, it’s your funeral people — Phoenix, French Kicks and locals The A-Sides play an “invite only” concert at the Trocadero, kindly sponsored by Camel cigarettes.

With every growing day I sound more and more like an actual straightedge wackjob, so I’m not going to mention the health issues surrounding smoking _at all_. Nope, not one peep from me. However, I will politely point out that Camel’s parent company, Reynolds American Inc., has donated 87% of its political contributions to the Republican party. Conservativecocainesexjams all night long! Enlist with the party train soldiers! Get rad in Iraq!

And with all the smoking going down tomorrow night, no one will notice how truly crappy Phoenix or the French Kicks are. As Philabuster pointed out, the French Kicks couldn’t even fill the North Star last time around. What sort of dumbass in Camel’s marketing thinks they can pack a 1,000-person venue? And how many years has it been since they’ve written anything remotely worthwhile?

Philly I’m ashamed of you, buying into crappy marketing like this so easily. Keep it up and you’ll be simply fodder for Blue States Lose.
