yeah yeah, i done gone and did it — ive redesigned the site. can anyone help me out with a weirdo php function that makes the far right column slide under the other when the screen size is too small? i dont want that to happen.
anyway, i am still mourning the loss of my beloved yacht rock, consoling myself by rewatching every episode a jillion times and reading the channel 101 board. looks like a fellow 101er made a michael mcdonald mockumentary.
if there is one sound i truly, truly, truly hate, its the sound of michael mcdonald’s voice. for real. but whenever i watch yacht rock, its the funniest thing alive, which just goes to show you how fake can be better than the real thing. “remichaeling” — brilliant!
» keep your eyes on yachtrock.com, btw.
» also in the 101averse — they’re doing a pilot for VH1. so exciting!
i dont have an original bone in my body. i was going to write about how austin, tx’s *finally punk* was new radio riot grrrl but then j-shep beat me, unknowingly, to the punch on the p-fork.
finally punk’s self-titled 7″ ep [12 songs for six bucks -- whatta deal! apparently im the first person to buy one -- so so special] relives that critical, brilliant moment of the millenial post-punk revival — you know, right before it became all about sucky disco cymbal rides permeating every inch of music, the quasi-high school popularity contests and other unsavory things [read: drugs] that essentially ruined a pretty great idea. remember that moment when you vaguely heard about some band called erase errata/liars/etc/etc/etc/etc and YSI/slsk was unheard of? [shit, we barely had ipods then!] anyway, six years have whizzed past us since then but im already feeling the nostalgia — i was finally old enough to go see shows in bars, finally old enough to get fucked up, finally old enough to be punk [if i wanted to, though i never was].
finally punk raged against the dying of the light in a typically dank west philly basement and for a brief moment, i got to feel young[er] all over again. this crop of nü-riot grrrl might claim ari up/slits as their lingua franca but its the jagged glory of kleenex/liliput and delta 5’s democracy that make finally punk fly right. its all there — from the “heidi’s head”-esque romp of “henri”, the police-siren calls of “penguin”, right down to switching instruments for every song. finally punk saved their milk money for a copy of _wanna buy a bridge?_ and smashed it to pieces; now they’re hurling those shards at every asshole who keeps their copy hermetically sealed.
its on “missile” that they go from being an awesome band i caught in a basement show to totally genius: “WHAT THE FUCK, MISSILE, WHAT THE FUCK?!” its dialogue perfectly plucked from some sort of twentysomething drama and trash-compacted with political meaning. finally punk might be entrenched in the world of lousy housemates and potlucks, but they sound wise beyond their years.
ps: check out their nirvana cover on the myspace page!
» big props to mairead on her cons live piece.
» things i have been thinking about, which i may or may not write more on later: ridiculous amount of drugs in rock music, knowing when to say when without sounding like some militant straightedger; memory and the films _blade runner_, _the brother from another planet_ and _men in black_.
» because of the world cup, everywhere on this godforsaken planet they served beverages out of plastic cups yesterday — everywhere except bay ridge, that is. my father got a bottle to his head [the result of an overenthusiastic friend] and had to have six stitches. does that top the headbutting incident at today’s game, no, but it totally comes close. what the fuck, bay ridge, what the fuck?
» lastly, dear world, im totally sorry for being a jerk of the highest order over the past few days. its not you, its me.
I’m kinda bummed I didn’t tape this show — I rather liked it. What I didn’t like was the headphones, acting all wonky. I’m one of those people who need to hear themselves in their headphones/monitors _very_ well, otherwise I’m just thrown off.

» seriously, WTF people — how did you actually enjoy friday’s boredoms show? they used to be a force of nature, now they’re a hippy drum circle with rave keyboards. toby saw the light too, one of the few people in the audience who didn’t have the proverbial wool pulled over their eyes. i hate being the douche who says this, but man, am i glad i didn’t pay to see that show.
» another plain parade show saturday night, the usual goodness. you folks need to come out to these things. for realz. there was a water main break on north 3rd street that i wound up having to ride my bike through, like i was a cowgirl in a western. bad news bats canceled due to “illness”. still, pagoda and the bottom lip totally kicked ass and took names. im surprised it hasn’t dawned on me before how make up-esque the bottom lip are. the singer is amusing. i forsee good things happening for both bands.
» the forthcoming lily allen record ist teh raedness, a day-glo hybrid between lizzy mercier descloux and MIA. [also looking forward to checking out the soon-to-be-released 'lost' LMD rec!] the hype on this thing is downright loathsome already, but whoa is this record totally F-U-N. what i want to know is: what is up with the spate of high school dropouts in music? OK, i guess lily and that girl from be your own pet doesnt constitute a spate per se, but its kind of a downer/weird and creepy, considering these kids come from wealthy families — you’d think their parents could afford a way to get them the education they need.
» spent what little free time working on a writing assignment. fret not, you’ll see the fruits of my labor here shortly. its really nice being able to write longer things — not that quick, blurby things are a drag, but those formats function differently. sometimes i just need a break from my usual punditry, yknow?
» more awesomeness: the new oxford collapse record. honestly the best thing they’ve ever done. you’ll love it. i swear.
» one of the things i hate about booking shows is that somehow suddenly, having an opinion is impossible — if i say something, its mistaken as being representative of plain parade. when people write me, i dont make the assumpting that they speak for a company. sometimes i wonder if i need one of those long disclaimers at on posts in legalese, a la corporate emails. in lieu of such a thing, let me say this: if i have an opinion that speaks for plain parade, ill tell you first. deal? rest assured, what i write here is all me, me, me. sorry to sound all vague and grouchy, i just feel like sometimes, this needs to be said.
» i love it when cats nuzzle up against laptops. so damn cute! temporary pets are good times, yo.
» a short list of tv shows im loving lately: venture bros, its always sunny in philadelphia, kathy griffin: my life on the d list
it feels like a decade has passed since i did this show, thanks to flood evacuations and all the other eight billion things that unexpectedly popped up over the last few days. so now i dont recall much of what happened during the show, save for a couple things. for example, my clumsiness with the board. it was like i was djing with boxing gloves on, i kept on pressing the wrong buttons. you’d think after all these years…
anyway, seems like a good set. right?
