Blink And You’ll Miss It

Monday, July 31st, 2006

» NYT has a totally vomit-inducing article on generation x, uh, hipsters who make money off their lifestyle. On the plus side, Plastic Little gets a little love in the aNYthing photo spread.

*Listen:* Plastic Little, “Foil”

» So I’ve been staring at this image of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs from a more recent issue of bUST in my bathroom for a couple weeks now and _only now_ do I realize that one of my former classmates was the photographer for the shoot. so nice to see aliya doing well! check her site for some great photos of TVOTR behind the scenes and whatnot.

» Weekend recap: Dicks / Clockcleaner at the Fire on Friday night, PP’s Bishop Allen / Teeth hoedown on Saturday. Good to see Badmintonstamps representin’ — if anyone has photos from the show, let me know.

If Everyone Else Rode The Fader, Would You Too?

» Have I died and gone to heaven? Oh no, it’s just another all-Chavez Friday! Yes, bust out all things Chavez and repeat the ending. Can someone please email me a copy of the “Draw Chavez” article from _Escandalo!_? I remember laughing hysterically [like, tears rolling down my face] and can’t seem to find my copy anywhere. Let’s hope Chavez celebrates this most joyous occasion with some live performances.

» Pretty much the coolest bar I’ve ever set foot in turns 5 this year and to celebrate, Superchunk is playing at the Cat’s Cradle on 9/1. That’s some “hiatus” there, yo. Ned, get the couch ready!

» Not going to the Pitchfork Festival this weekend? Lucky you, ’cause Plain Parade has Bishop Allen and The Teeth doing some extended jamming at Tritone this Saturday night. Philly people, don’t forget who turned you on to BA in the first place.

Get Your Fresh, Hot Agnew Right Here

Friday, July 28th, 2006

I know there’s some people out there who just can’t get enough of Sean Agnew. I mean, how can you not? The dude is like _Arthur_ and _Vice_ magazines rolled up into one big, Sparks-fueled concert promotion machine. Thankfully, an anonymous but brilliant soul has realized this ever-important niche market and created SeanSpotter™ for your internet-surfing pleasure. Could this be this summer’s Celebridelphia or Cherry Coke? It’s looking that way.

And to think this is all going down in the same town my grandfather/aunt/random Spamulists live in. Not sure if this is more hilarious: Ultragrrrl misspelling “macabre” with “maccabe” on her blog, which only made me think of ink & dagger’s sean mccabe.

Life, Or Something Like It

Monday, July 24th, 2006

Awwwwright, birthday festivities are over [and they were fun]. Thanks to all who came out or bothered to call when they were going to lame out [this means you, JT]. A quick recap:

» Freakin’ Sweet: my bro gave me a new guitar! Epiphone SG, for the guitar nerds in the house. Now I have to one-up him for his birthday next month. Bastard.

» Clerks 2: I walked into the Riverview expecting this movie to majorly blow, so you can imagine my surprise when I realized I liked it. I mean really, a Clerks sequel? And despite all the dirty jokes, donkeys, etc there’s a sweet, tender core to this flick. It’s somewhat unsettling at first but just like the characters, you’ll come around to it.

» Hollertronix: As it was my birthday, I indulged in a celebratory drink or two, which made it a bit difficult in discerning whether guest MC Amanda Blank gave me a shoutout from the Transit stage. I’m sure it was more of a general birthday shoutout, which is cool. Also: I danced with dudes! I know this does not sound like anything earthshattering but usually when I go to things like this, dudes always want to dance with my female companions [and usually try to get it on with them]. I am pretty much the person on the sidelines. Maybe they knew it was my birthday? If so, why can’t everyday be like my birthday? Except for the part where I leave my bike locked up in Center City because it’s too late to ride the rest of the way home.

Also, I’m hoping I’ll be able to get some new music up in the mp3blog this week but don’t hold your breath. If anything, look forward to Wednesday’s radio show for more audio fun.

Rockpile Calls It A Day

Monday, July 24th, 2006

As many may recall, I wrote briefly for Rockpile. I might have differing opinions on their editorial directions of the writing I contributed, but whatever, that cat-and-mouse is writing for ya. Mike, Allan and Matt are fan-fucking-tastic people; should the Apocalypse ever come, I hope they’re on my side. And they did a helluva job turning a magazine that was the _Origivation_ of its day into a nice little glossy slice of indie rock heaven. So, it’s a little sad to hear they’re shutting down Rockpile due to financial difficulties. Anyway, here’s what they had to say:

ROCKPILE MAGAZINE ANNOUNCES CLOSING
After more than 12 years and #120 issues of of consistent, regular publication, Rockpile Magazine will be closing its doors.

To our readers, contributors, supporters and advertisers,

On Friday, July 28th, 2006, Rockpile Magazine will be closing its doors. Although we have weighed various options, it is almost certain that we will not be publishing another issue, including our scheduled August issue. We apologize for any inconvenience and disappointment, but recognize that we currently have no other choice.

Not surprisingly, financial shortcomings have forced this closure. And while it pains us to have to throw in the towel, we take immense consolation in our achievements of the past two years since going completely independent. In fact, few publications can boast a similar track record in terms of longevity, innovation, let alone creative and financial autonomy.

Every success in our editorial, art, circulation and marketing was realized only through the consistent support of many contributors, volunteers, advertisers, readers and artists. To everyone who read Rockpile, wrote, designed or photographed for us, to all the bands and artists who made time for an interview, and to every label and company that supported us with their advertising dollars, we’d like to offer a resounding and heart-felt “Thank you.”

Sincerely,
Allan Martin Kemler, Michael McKee, Matt McGlynn
Publishers, Rockpile Magazine

vote for the spinto band

Friday, July 21st, 2006

from one nicholas krill, who is seemingly always out of the country lately, touring like crazy with his band of spintos:

if you fancy clicking bubbles and voting for things, you might like to know that you can vote for the spinto band’s ‘oh mandy’ music video in the below poll…(the poll is for most interesting thing since Charles Wheatstone cam up with the now famous Wheatstone Bridge — he also invented the concertina!)

any how, please click here and vote OH MANDY
