who will cut our hair when we’re gone?

Tuesday, June 27th, 2006

death permeates this tuesday — first sleater kinney, now my beloved yacht rock:

What can be said about Yacht Rock that hasn’t been said by various magazines, newspapers and disc jockeys across the country? J.D. Ryznar and Hunter Stair’s saga detailing the unknown mythical origins of a previously obscure genre of music struck the audience like a lightning bolt on its first episode, much like fellow 101 breakout House of Cosbys. Unlike HoC, however, Yacht Rock was never sued by its iconic characters’ real life counterparts. In fact, it is said that at one time or another, just about every musician lovingly portrayed in the series has witnessed and enjoyed it behind closed doors. Yacht Rock enjoyed success on levels and in ways previously unattained by 101 shows, its title becoming a household phrase at radio stations, a bin at your local record store and a category on iTunes. But beneath its pop cultural triumph was an artistic one that often went undescribed: Yacht Rock’s stories were always clever and sometimes downright genius in their assembly, weaving trivia, common knowledge, exaggerations and fabrications into a rope strong enough to hold it at the #1 position for an unbelievable number of non-consecutive months, setting audience share records at Channel 101 that are unlikely to be broken any time soon and sweeping the 2005 Channy Awards. Ironically, Channel 101’s most memorable show came to its end quietly and unremarkably, not unlike some of the careers it saluted with a smirk. Instead of choking on its vomit in a Paris bathtub or overdosing on a Hollywood sidewalk, Yacht Rock simply told us one last story about Steely Dan, then hoisted its sails and drifted away while a satisfied crowd waved goodbye from the docks, exactly one incredible year after its historical debut. Bye, Yacht Rock. We loved you.

stay smooth, hollywood steve.

better get a ticket to that philly show NOW…

couch top confessional

Saturday, June 24th, 2006

i have to admit something here — in all the years i have resided at the sober cabin™ i have not attended a show at danger! danger! house and for that, i truly suck as a human being. im always complaining about how fishtown is too far away or that people are too lazy to check out shows and here i am totally _not_ practicing what i preach. see, if you were me, you’d come home from a day at work, sit on the couch and think, “im not leaving here”.

tonight i opted out of resting on my laurels and hightailed it to the north star to see the starpower city/danger danger show. it was grandchildren’s record release show, with voodoo economics, lee jae-won, red rocket, thinking machines and bear is driving. not in that order, but close enough.

what made this different from the usual lineup of bands was that the stage had 2 sets of equipment; while one band played, the other side set up. it was like a mini-intonation festival of philly punk! the best part was that there were no gaps in the music and so the evening was one non-stop stream of music. all of it, quite good. quite possibly one of the best shows ive seen in town all year? could be.

because it wouldnt be my blog without mentioning the following:

» ive received a copy of the forthcoming oxford collapse record. i dig it on the initial spins. i cannot comment any further and i cant even tell you why i cant tell you more. can you handle my [limited and very vague] truth? my boss is gonna flip when she sees that mark arm of mudhoney sent me the record.

» the constantines have a new video for “working full-time”, which is due out quite soon and while i cant share it with you, let me say this — its good. there are parts that make me think “sledgehammer” but i mean that in the bestest awesomest way. suddenly im wishing its last summer and i could see these two bands again.

hit the road jack!

Thursday, June 22nd, 2006

Oh me oh my — it must be swamplike conditions of a Philadelphia summer that’s causing our bands to flee. Or maybe they’re getting tired of the 2 week rule of local promoters. Either way, more Philly bands are hitting the road and those of you who live elsewhere should go see them, support them, house them. All I want to know is — who’s going to fill our stages and crowds when they’re gone?

james from apple of discord goes on brief tour

Monday, June 19th, 2006

james is my tennis “coach” insomuch that he basically told me one day that i didnt totally suck in my return to the sport. i wanna know who im supposed to play with while he’s gone? [ed, art? where are you guys?] anyway, perhaps you need a spot of acoustic niceness in your daily dose of rock’n'roll? In addition to whatever caffienated bevarage product you’ll pick up at these coffee shops, that is.

And while you’re at it, ask him about that “Pitchfork Vampires” song.

I’m going on a short solo tour that begins June 23 and goes from New Jersey to Indiana and back. I’m promoting the upcoming full-length, and will have copies of a new AOD acoustic solo cd as well. Shows are as follows:

Jun 24 2006 Oakland, PA - CPOF House
