mummers parade on two street
Sunday, January 2nd, 2005since i had a relatively sober new years eve, i was able to wake up early and enjoy what is possibly the city’s oddest tradition, the mummer’s parade. our city’s finest blue collar men don shiny dresses and march down the city streets with string bands and perform skits. and if humanly possible, they consume more alcohol than the night before.
mummers are also very serious about strutting [which is what its called, though i prefer “mumming”]. its a family tradition and the brigades can spend upwards of one million dollars on their performances.
i headed down to jt & helen’s on two street, which is where all the brigades have their clubhouses and its the official terminus of the parade. thus, madness and hilarity ensues. and more raging drunkeness. if it werent for the costumes, i would mistake this for a guided by voices concert.
