We’ve Lost Beauty
Axi Nue (a.k.a Kate Carter) succumbed to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma at the age of 25 on Saturday, January 29. She was a pleasure to all who knew her through The Dumpsta Players, Broken Hipsters, Ladyfest Philly, Red Skate Red; as well as various queer, activist, and theater companies throughout the city.

The service will be held at 7 PM Tuesday, 2/1 at at the Shambala Center (2030 Sansom Street). There will be space during or after the service for people to remember her in their own way. Sing a song, do a dance, read a poem.

Audible “Sunday Bell”

Relying on highly specific imagery to propel the music, it’s safe to say Audible is a bit of a misnomer. However, Moviola is already taken, so I guess they’ll have to stick with this name. That’s fine — my favorite part of a movie is the scoring and in this film, this is the song that makes the camera pan circles around its subjects, fits perfectly with the quick edits and turns everything a brilliant shade of Technicolor. (The tune that follows this on my iTunes application is “Pink Frost” by the Chills. Either this application innately knows music, or its just an eerie but fitting coincedence.)

This song is on the brand new Sky Signal, a record thats being released by Polyvinyl Records on January 25th. Oh hey, that’s today. If you liked this, then head over there and buy it!

In non-Philadelphia band related news, thanks to a friend of mine, I now know of Diskothi-Q’s football albums. In the spirit of the Eagles NFC victory (and impending trip to the Superbowl!), here’s a song about them.

Notekillers, “House At Pooneil Corner” (featuring Dasha)

People, you need to give me a fucking reason to update this thing. Sure, its nice posting songs about bands I like but if I get bogged down in My Life, this thing ain’t gonna happen.

Needless to say, moments after an email from the Notekillers arrived here and I listened to this song, I knew I had to share it with you. I mean, whats to hate about one of the most seminal no-wave bands covering the Jefferson Airplane political sci-fi classic, especially on the eve of Teh Inau9urati0n? [sorry, ilxor speak there. cant help it. it flows out of me, like feelings. mental feelings.]

From the warped atonal notes plucked at its beginning, to the impending doom struck with every cymbal crash, this track slays. And Dasha’s vocals would make Slick proud. Hearing this rendition makes me understand, in a way, what hearing rock music was like back when it was new and it terrified the fuck out of mass culture.

And to continue with my wave of nostalgia, here’s a show flyer of theirs from way back in the day.

David Graham, Yosemite National Park, CA

i have to say i was pretty lucky to have david graham as one of my teachers, especially during my last two years of school. he is responsible for my love of hasselblad cameras, as well as influencing my own approach to creating images.

he’s doing a lecture this thursday at penn’s school of design [5PM, B-3 meyerson hall], which i am going to try my hardest to attend. if you’re in the area, its worth checking out.
