am i a music snob?

Wednesday, September 15th, 2004

i really wouldnt ask this question, but friday night i found myself [once again] arguing the merits of guided by voices “teenage fbi” — the 7″ version versus the full-length one and a friends response [”its OK, we know you’re a music snob”] made me wonder.

am i, really? i never thought of myself as such. i know im weirded out by overexposure and hype, but im openminded otherwise. the only kinds of music i really dislike is mall emo and… um, rap-rock.

maybe thats my art school upbringing — try to find something of merit in everything. i can appreciate lots of so-called bad R&B because of this, which is how i kept my sanity as an employee of stupid and crazy for so long.

and lets not discount my work as a DJ and promoter. so if im not a snob, then what am i?

id like to think that im merely knowledgeable about music. and i like to share my enthusiasm with folks, especially by telling all of you wonderful people “hey! listen to this damn record!”

before i get overly posi on you, dear blog reader, just because im brimming to the edges with musical happiness doesnt mean im blind to everything else. lots of records/bands/etc are problematic for many reasons and the knowledgeable person should be able to discuss their love for a record while addressing these issues. isnt that what good critic does?

[i am so NOT a critic though, i cant really swing with big words and whatnot.]

ive been waiting for almost ever.

making us both look bad

a good show, marred by the next dj [not art] hitting the turntable mid-song and then throwing the death of samantha record underneath a plastic binder. sigh.
