indeed, the potential exists
May 6th, 2004its been a criminally busy week. thursday i had a show and sleepover party with low skies. i cannot recommend this band enough. read this review, buy their record and believe. [seriously though, when have i ever steered you wrong?]
friday was sugar town with the motherfucking clash, thee minks and whitney pastorek. saturday was the trouble with sweeney record release show. sunday… i think i lounged about. maybe i did work? i dont know.
monday was our sharron kraus / baird sisters / saint joan show. SJ sound like dirty three crossed with dry-era pj harvey vocals. it was perfect rainy monday night music. tuesday… ? i cant remember.
yesterday was a business meeting with some folks. somehow we wound up at the trocadero, watching cattle decapitation and some other grindcore bands i cant remember. do the names really matter, anyway? all the bands are pretty much the same. gotta hand it to their singers, though. i wouldnt be able to talk if i sang like them. how do they do that and not shred their vocal chords?
what was most interesting about the show, was the audience. everyone stood there, like a bunch of bored indie rockers. take everyone out of their black clothing and it would have been a scene out of a belle & sebastian concert. the circle pit wasnt even really happening. remember the days when pits were just people pushing each other around? now its a space for people to get all elvis and practice their kung-fu moves. i contemplated jumping in and doing some figure skating stuff, which would have been right at home.
OK, let’s go forward. thursday im going to see patrick wolf at piano’s. god bless jamie hanson for recommending his record, lycanthropy. bjork has her swan, patrick has his wolf. this record is glitchy beats sensually intertwined with minstrel instrumentation. six months from now i bet all of you will be fawning over this guy.
friday night is our quails / true if destroyed / kiss kiss kill show at the millcreek. yeah, i know they’re playing with ian mackayes new band next week, but our show is better than R5’s. im sorry its 21+. give me a million dollars and i will open up an all-ages venue, though.
saturday, the cardigans are performing at the smaller-than-you-think maxwell’s. i cant wait to see plain parade’s namesake.

i love tomlab records. pretty much everything they’re involved with is awesome, but they don’t tour enough.
but you could bring patrick to philly someday, couldn’t you?
