GET-UP, but dont you dare cross the picket line

February 25th, 2004

jt.r, my friendly neighborhood activist [though i never see him nor do i reside in the same vicinity as he], breaks down the whole GET-UP strike that is going to occur in a few short hours.

there’s been hardly an ounce of talk about this in the local media, and that’s strange for a city that is ruled by the whims of the unions, for better or worse.

i wish it were ruled by unions. i’m reading _democracy is in the streets_ by jim miller right now, and our City’s unions are really partnered with the local growth coalitions. that is, the AFL unions (building trades) have a say, whereas the CIO unions (industrial laborers/janitors/TA’s/strippers) are beggared by local media and government.

i think that UPenn may have an agreement with local media so as not to create an uproar citywide.

even though this will be way too far down the page for anyone to notice, it’s funny that GETUP was thrilled with the outcome. of course, most mass membership organizations would say that just to rally the troops, especially if they weren’t totally demoralized.

but they also claimed to have gotten a ton of sympathetic press with the exception of the DP (double penetration? seems more accurate, in a way). i didn’t see this, but they’ve got buttloads linked.
