5/23/03 - kandwhales, dosh, fog

Sunday, May 25th, 2003

you’d think the noise art of newton/neon hunk was the most “out there” show that we’ve done, but i think this title is reserved for friday nights show.

what the press perceived to be left-wing hip hop, was most of the case, not. kandywhales played the most hook-filled, danceariffic set; tunes that were just as much rock as they were electronica. dosh played abstract hip hop by finagling the delay pedal. fog managed to combine turntablism, improvisational music and indie rock into a compelling body of work.

anyone that entered with preconceived notions had them all shattered by the time was over, and that made it the most satisfying for me. i strive to make shows that are equal parts accessible and challenging, tonight did not disappoint.

5/22/03: persona, cordalene, nixons head

Sunday, May 25th, 2003

there’s nothing like power pop to get you going, especially after the slumpy april/may we’ve been having. persona were super good and both bands loved playing with the newcomer on the bill. cordaelene were excellent as usual and nixons head were dad-rock in the best way imaginable.

round one

Sunday, May 18th, 2003

the hardest part about being a booking agent is getting cds. no really! its not like walking into a record store and picking your favorite CDs out. a lot of it is made by people you dont know and often runs the risk of sucking.

good packages are like epiphanies, framed in halos and all that good stuff. and ill tell you this - some of my favorite cds right now were sent by anonymous folks.

ratings are in the style of record reviews at WPRB.

the secret channel (?)
boston based post-punk-ISH band, sent along to us by nick of the cignal.

cigarbox planetarium (?+)
husband and wife from arlington, va makes sounds that REALLY sound like lawrence welk. its so anti-punk its punk to me.

xtheowl (?)
post-punk from parts nyc and philadelphia.

black lipstick (?+)
heirs to the butterglory throne with some MES-esque vocals thrown in. from austin, tx. you knew some of them previously as the kiss-offs. this is the hot hit of the summer, so far.

the beeves (?+)
if devo were a post-hardcore band that discovered its fondess for indie pop, it probably would sound like this. hard to swallow at times and thats what i like about it.

Awek s/t CD EP

Saturday, May 17th, 2003

new york city’s awek sound like those hazy days of mid-90’s indie rock and this is not a bad thing. given that post-punk has post-imploded, and the 80’s are on their way out [but no one’s told the hipsters across this great nation yet], those truly on the cutting edge of trends are going back to a time when all of this ridiculousness began.

stephen malkmus could learn a few lessons from the pavement-influenced “phototype”, a song that urgently surges forward and at its musical breaking point release woozy, drawling guitar lines reminiscient of the long-forgotten raymond brake. the first time i heard this song, in mp3 format and over my laptops crappy speakers, i was floored.

the biggest drawback and strength to this record is its brevity; its too short to really sink your teeth into but it keeps you expectant for their next release or for when they grace the stage in your town. [and if they do, GO.]

5/16/03: the cignal, the graveyard school, creatures of the golden dawn

Saturday, May 17th, 2003

i like it when i can pay our bands. they work so hard, you know.

tonight my friend nick’s band, the cignal, came down from boston. we’ve been trying to get them a show since december. no… make that like a year and a half ago. [prior to us doing shows, remember] they rocked the house in a strange daydream nation / post-punk way. i know that doesnt sound compelling but trust me, it is. their drummer – incredible.

i wasnt particularly thrilled with the second band, the graveyard school. sara’s into the whole straightforward punk rock thing, but im not. it just seems indistinguishable. when the sound kinks were worked out, i thought they were better.

creatures of the golden dawn were amazing. im thrilled the CP covered it and thrilled to finally watch JT rock out. since im fairly young in the music scene, i missed his previous band, the Original Sins. im only familiar with his solo material, so there’s no need to explain the excitement i felt when he threw in a love riff in the middle of a song. the singer reminded me of a garage-rock mark e smith. lots of maracas.

5/13/03: stephen malkmus, the trocadero

Wednesday, May 14th, 2003

dan, the manager of this radiant boy, kindly put me on the guestlist for this show. the cash cow that is plain parade does not allow me the luxury of purchasing 15$ concert tickets [plus one dollar to the troc “renovation”]… yet.

even if i could have afforded it, it probably wouldnt have. im fully aware of why ticket prices are the way they are, but that doesnt mean i have to participate in the whole scheme of things. i wouldnt be surprised if it was the reason why the club didnt look so full, anyway.

but this is a show, and i made every effort to you know, enjoy myself.

if there’s one thing to make me swear off live music forever, its a pissy stephen malkmus performance. luckily, last night was not the case.

he appeared to be in good spirits and as a result, played a decent set. despite the constant urging of various audience members, no pavement songs were played. [want those? go see preston school of industry sometime, who are by far the better of the post-pavemoo projects]

he even switched instruments during the encore with the drummer and they did, what i think, was a cover.

overall: not bad, but could have been better. being a diehard pavement fan, i will never be fully satisfied.

dead meadow/moon/whatever opened and for 40 minutes, bored me to tears with their cookie-cutter stoner rock riffs. in fact, the highlight of their performance was not what they were doing on stage, but the actions of 2 specific audience members. these goofy guys [alone in a sea of standstill fangeeks] were dancing along and after a particularly intense musical climax by the band, high-fived each other, completely aware of the high irony of such an action. im surprised i didnt pee in my pants from laughing so hard.

5.9.03: helen back, mimirock

Saturday, May 10th, 2003

given our track record with shows recently, i had reservations about this show for a while, specifically because we booked only 2 bands: helen back & the str8 razors, and mimirock.

but for some reason, 7 dollars for 2 bands was enough to draw 45 people out of their homes on a chilly friday night in may.

because of the 2 bands, we pushed back the show, which worked to everyone’s benefit. mimirock got to play in front of an audience, leaving a path of destruction filled confetti, feather and glitter everywhere. the audience loved it, they loved the light show, the fog machine.

helen, minus the props, filled the crowd with punked-up covers, gender benders and all around good times. the crowd danced, they sang along, they loved.

i wasnt feeling particularly well since my allergies were acting up, so everything i processed was through this muddy frame of reference. yet, it appeared to be really enjoyable.

begin the beguine

i am proud of myself, not only have i taken a step forward into uh, more complex weblogging territory; i handled cgi like a pro.

so what does this mean? you’ll be able to view posts by specific categories. so if you want to only see radio playlists, you can do that. if you want to read my music babble, you can. but i dont know why you’d do such a thing.
