written with a hand injury, an essay diced into a couple parts.
the so-called battle of the sexes has never really crossed my mind; ive been lucky to have supportive female communities surrounding me for most of my life. slowly and most secretly, this has begun to shift into a very us against them attitude. [no pun, eric b!]
i dont think i ever foresaw its undercurrents from my childhood in the figure skating community to my time in an academic department where the majority of students were female [18:2]. otherwise, in the places where i spent my free time, i noticed a case of a strange strain of sexual politic ocurring, a hypersexism.
its freely acknowleged that women are allowed to do whatever they want in this day in age, but it seems that so many of us have fallen back to specific roles in society. countless women fought against the donna reed image of being the perfect wife, but now so many strive to martha stewarts level. furthermore, where women have made such incredible strides in music, many seem content to keep to the sidelines for their boyfriends or play lesser roles in rock groups. those that do flock together, seem to be an oddity.
