Here is the latest Sugar

February 27th, 2001

Here is the latest Sugar Town press release, fashionably late, of course.

The Amy Salit Birthday Edition of Sugar Town, with Undergirl, Pearly Gates, and The Sugar Town DJs

Thursday, March 1, 9:30, at The Balcony, above The Trocadero at 10th and Arch, 215-922-LIVE $6, 21+

Our next soiree will be the special “Amy Salit Birthday Edition” of Sugar Town, even though she told me not to. In honor of the Fresh Air producer and lady-about-town, please buy her some bourbon and request Patti Smith. If anyone has Patti’s version of “You Light Up My Life,” please bring it. We’ll play it.

My other favorite Amy is Amy DiCamillo, leader and guitarist of Undergirl, one of the bands who inspired us to do Sugar Town in the first place. After a couple of singles and a slot on the 1999 Warped Tour, the group, which now includes Rabbit in Red’s Anna Winfield on bass, are about to release their full-length debut with the Captain
Beefheart-inspired title, “She’s Too Much For My Mirror.” DiCamillo also plans on changing all the band members’ last names to the more rock-and-roll sounding “Action.” see also:city paper.

The Pearly Gates, last seen opening for The Go-Betweens, is the new countrified VU vehicle for Inky/Weekly/Magnet scribe and former Psyclone Rangers frontman Jonathan Valania, featuring the dulcet tones of the very glamorous Heather Brann, usually playing Exene Cervenk(ov)a to Red Burns’ John Doe in The Sugar Skulls. The line-up also includes other ex-Psyclone Rangers and members of The Sugar Skulls and retro-romantics The Beach Balls. It’s not known if Valania will be wearing a
dress, but he will definitely be sporting a big hat or a megaphone.

As usual, Sugar Town DJ’s will spin your favorite ladies of various genres, from the Altered Images to Young Marble Giants.

Sugar Town takes its name from the Nancy Sinatra song that goes, “sha-sha-sha-sha-sha, Sugar Town!”

****Coming on April 12: Winterbrief and Persons (featuring ex-Boys of Now’s Sara
Marcus)***************
