Desperately Seeking New Jeans
My current faves, Old Navy’s “Sweetheart” skinny jeans, are becoming extinct. Why, Old Navy, WHY?! These are the best jeans ever.
I need to replace them, and soon. Here is what I want, read closely, then recommend:
- High rise (preferable), though I’ll take anything nearing the waistline. (Sorry, when you’re my size low rise jeans are shaaaaaaameful and should be as...
Let Johnny Weir Perform During the Olympic... →
For someone who spends their time observing the rest of the world, I am oblivious to my own body. Case in point: it appears I have broken a toe. (Don’t ask me how, I have no idea.) My foot’s been hurting for about three days, but only today am I aware of the cause.

I am not going to look at blogs that make me mad....
(via jgh2)
Good mantra. Although sometimes you totally need to do the “Surf of Distaste” just to make yourself feel slightly better about life. (HT maura for the term)
And while I’m at it: Why the fuck do people continue to send me things?
Actual Music Press Release I Bothered To Read
Attention music publicists: I might read your inane releases if the artists you are promoting are artists I actually care about. Yes, this means your 15th message about Neon Golden Indian Wolf Pancakes was deleted, and I took great pleasure in doing so.

Got really bummed that this was not the Will Bryant who was one of the early Pitchfork news editors, and made some of the greatest mixtapes I have ever received. Honest; pretty...
Lost In Translation: Musical Selection in Figure... →
Since Johnny Weir’s loss last night is still fresh in my mind, I thought it might be nice to share the paper I wrote for the 2006 EMP conference regarding creativity in the sport of figure skating — and how music matters/doesn’t matter.
Re-reading this paper, I should make some retrospective remarks:
This is probably the first real “research” paper I’ve ever...
Everyone's An Expert on Figure Skating When It's...
EEEEEEE! Tonight’s the men’s long program! I got so amped up for this event that I thought it was yesterday.
I wager that NBC is going to broadcast the final 8-10 skaters of the night; this is the planned skating order: Denis Ten (Kazakhstan), Kevin Van Der Perren (Germany), Florent Amadio (France), Patrick Chan (Canada), Michal Brezina (Czech Republic), Evan Lysacek (US), Nobunari...
My Punk Rock Skating Club Idea
So I kind of want to start a skating club. Like, register it with the USFSA, rent ice time, and all that shit. But I don’t want it to consist of the typical corny skating nonsense — essentially I want to have a place where average folks come out to skate & improve their skills as a group. (And get a great workout, too!) And it would function like a non-profit — we’d...
Is Figure Skating Fixed? →
Interesting take on the flaws of the current judging system. Look, let’s get something straight about the sport: it will never be unbiased or free of error. This is because of what figure skating is — the intersection of creatively-oriented movement and athleticism. However, what can be done is to make sure judging is as fair as possible, which it is not.
“To be a skating judge,...

Do you love stats and figure skating? Mosey on over to the Vancouver 2010 website for complete point breakdowns of each performance during the Olympics.
I should add that while I dislike the CoP system because it has sapped what little “artistry” is in the sport, the Math Whisperer in me loves numbers.

“The myth of the academic meritocracy powerfully affects students from families that believe in education, that may or may not have attained a few undergraduate degrees, but do not have a lot of experience with how access to the professions is controlled. Their daughter goes to graduate school, earns a doctorate in comparative literature from an Ivy League university, everyone is proud of...

Not one to complain about the temperature, BUT...
In theory, driving with a dress on is the ultimate in car comfort. However, when you’re putting gas in your car, and it’s 9 degrees in St Catharine’s, ON, it is not such a great idea in retrospect.
BTW: more snow in Philadelphia than Toronto right now. Kiiiinda hilarious!
Yes, I am smug about my ability to dig out my car. You should see the number of people who are just throwing snow into the street. Because, you know, that totally helps.
Better Know An Emergency Alert System →
Don’t know about you, but here in Philadelphia an EAS alert about the shutdown of some interstate roads just went out over the TV and cable broadcast. I should be used to the sound of the EAS after all my years at WPRB, but the jarring tones never grow old.
Ever wonder what makes the EAS tick or why you’ll only receive certain messages on certain providers? Here you go.

No matter what happens, SNOWPOCALYPSE 2: ELECTRIC BOOGALOO is going to mess with my plans to have a graduation party. I’m positive of this. However, I am not giving up — tonight’s the night.
Medium is the message (with apologies to McLuhan)
Once again, another night where I passed out on the couch, but this time I woke up at 3AM to an episode of the Cosby Show where Cliff and Theo Huxtable were fighting about getting tickets for graduation. The timing of this episode was purely coincedental, but man, how apropos.
Shitty First Drafts →
“For me and most of the other writers I know, writing is not rapturous. In fact, the only way I can get anything written at all is to write really, really shitty first drafts.”

It Just Dawned On Me That It's Thursday.
That means at 1:00 p.m. tomorrow, I will be a MASTER of Broadcasting, Telecommunications, AND Mass Media*. (Communications degree with an unwieldy name the school is trying to change.) Will they be able to contain all that awesomeness on my diploma? Is there enough space for that? Should I start wearing my hood with all of my teaching outfits?
